What to Expect During Late Spring Lawn Applications in Indiana

Late spring is one of the most important times of the year for your lawn. This is when we start to see the majority of weeds for the season, along with increased insect activity and potential lawn diseases.

At Pro-Turf Indiana, our late spring applications are designed to protect your lawn, strengthen growth, and get ahead of problems before they get worse.

Here’s what you can expect during this stage of the season.

Why Late Spring Applications Matter

As temperatures rise, your lawn begins to grow more aggressively — but so do weeds, insects, and diseases.

This is the time of year when issues like crabgrass, broadleaf weeds, ticks, lawn insects, and disease pressure really begin to take off.

Our goal during late spring is to stay ahead of these problems so your lawn can stay thick, healthy, and protected going into summer.

What We Apply During Late Spring

Pre-Emergent

We apply a pre-emergent to help prevent weeds like crabgrass from continuing to develop. This helps extend protection through the growing season.

Weed Control

This is when most homeowners start noticing weeds. We apply targeted weed control products to eliminate existing weeds and prevent them from spreading further.

Fertilizer

Fertilization is applied to promote healthy, consistent growth. This helps your lawn thicken up and naturally crowd out weeds.

Fungicide Applications (When Needed)

As temperatures and humidity increase, lawn disease becomes more common — and it’s important to know that disease can affect even the healthiest lawns.

If you begin noticing areas where grass is thinning, discoloring, or dying off, we recommend reaching out to us so we can evaluate the issue and provide a solution.

For customers looking to stay ahead of disease, we offer two options:

  • Targeted fungicide applications — applied as needed when issues arise
  • 3-step fungicide program — a proactive approach using preventative treatments throughout the season

This proactive program is designed to help reduce the risk of disease before it starts, especially during high-risk conditions.

Lawn Insect Control (Program Customers Only)

Insect control applications are provided only for customers enrolled in our lawn insect control program. These treatments help protect your lawn from damaging insects as activity increases.

Tick & Pest Activity

This is also the time when ticks and other pests become more active around your property. If you are noticing increased activity, additional services may be recommended.

Mosquito Shield Applications

Late spring is when we begin seeing a significant increase in mosquito populations. As temperatures warm and moisture levels rise, mosquitoes become much more active around properties.

This is when we begin our Mosquito Shield applications, designed to reduce mosquito activity around your home and outdoor living areas.

If you’re planning to spend more time outside this season, this is the time to get ahead of mosquito problems before they peak in summer.

Best Mowing Practices for Late Spring

Proper mowing is one of the most overlooked parts of lawn care, but it plays a huge role in how your lawn performs — especially during late spring and going into summer.

  • Turf-Type Tall Fescue: Maintain at 3.5–4 inches
  • Kentucky Bluegrass: Maintain at 3–3.5 inches

Mowing your lawn higher has several benefits:

  • Encourages thicker grass growth
  • Provides natural weed suppression by shading the soil
  • Helps retain moisture during hot, dry conditions
  • Reduces stress during summer heat and drought

Important: Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at one time. Cutting too much at once can stress the lawn and slow down growth.

Common Questions Homeowners Have

When will I start seeing results?

You may start noticing weed control results within a few days, but full results can take 1–2 weeks depending on the type of weeds and weather conditions.

Is it normal to see more weeds right now?

Yes — late spring is when most weeds become visible. This is exactly why these applications are so important.

Do I need to water after the application?

Some applications benefit from watering, while others should be left alone. If watering is needed, we will provide specific instructions.

Can I let my kids or pets on the lawn?

We recommend staying off the lawn until the application has fully dried.

Once dry, it is safe for normal use.

How long does it take for the application to dry?

Dry time depends on weather conditions, but typically takes a few hours.

What You Can Do to Help Your Lawn

  • Follow any watering instructions provided
  • Avoid mowing immediately after treatment if possible
  • Keep pets and foot traffic off until the lawn is dry
  • Maintain proper mowing height and consistency
